Economy
According to the World Bank, the deterioration of the socio-economic situation seen in DRC has taken the country back to the mid 1950s in terms of economic development. Years of wars and financial mismanagement, fiscal overruns, corruption and lack of transparency in government policy have led to serious deterioration of the economy of DRC. To overcome the economic stagnation and reduce poverty, UREC will implement government reforms to attract genuine investors. DRC is seen mainly as a commodity supplier—including supply of high-valued minerals such as gold, diamonds, tantalum, cobalt, and timber or of precariously priced crops such as coffee and cocoa. This focus on mineral export has excluded the country from the more dynamic sectors of manufacturing, financial services, and information technology.
We will work effortlessly to revamp our agriculture output, regulate and renew activity in the mining sector and the timber industry in order to boost exports. Major effort will be deployed to build the country’s infrastructure and to stimulate R&D. Fiscal reforms and taxation regulations will be developed and implemented to build trustworthiness and creditworthiness with major donors.
UREC economic agenda is based on modernization of the economic system to make it competitive on a global scale. An integrated approach consisting of high quality education system, state-of-the art R&D, fiscal discipline, professional and effective army to deter threats and ensure security, and critical government reforms to tackle corruption and restore transparency will be required in order to create a prosperous economy that raises standards for workers and their families, and make businesses more competitive locally and abroad.
UREC believes that the role of a government is to create an economic system that works for all citizens. We will restore economic opportunities for all by creating jobs, improving the wage system to give economic purchasing power to families, and stimulating the emergence of a middle-class.
